EDUCATION AT NORTHBAY
Freshwater mussels play critical ecological roles and are important for water quality and clarity and yet we know relatively little about their basic ecology.  Join us as we explore the fresh tidal system of the Susquehanna Flats area of the Chesapeake Bay as we search for these amazing animals to answer authentic research questions that are critical to the survival of these important organisms.  We will go out on the research vessel Miss Nancy to dredge for freshwater mussels to determine where these animals are found and to determine if the mussels on the Susquehanna Flats are reproducing. Led by NorthBay Education staff. $35/participant.

ARE YOU HEARING YOUR STUDENTS? ARE THEY HEARING YOU?
ENHANCING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR STUDENTS

Have you wondered why no matter how well you explain something, sometimes the child sitting in front of you does not get it? Have you ever wondered the same thing about yourself?  Have you seen the effects of experience on the classroom process or in treatment?  What if you found out that processing has everything to do with preference, outcome has a lot to do with matching and engaging the participant in the most appropriate way?  Come to this pre-conference to learn about language, non-violent communication, mechanisms of therapy and how all of this combined with experiential education can be useful in the class room and in the treatment process. Led by Tiffany Wynn. $35/participant.

PLAY YOUR WAY INTO LITERACY

Play Your Way into Literacy is a hands-on workshop. Participants will be lead through various activities and will be expected to come ready to play. In a half-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to go more in depth into the world of improvisation and it’s connection to literacy and building self-esteem. Throughout the workshop, presenter will describe the benefits she has observed in using these strategies with her students and also how various improvisational activities can be linked to particular skills such as understanding what a “setting” is in a story or understanding how to describe characters using emotions. Depending on the group, more advanced improvisational activities may be introduced. Led by Lisa Safran. $65/participant.
